The Queen of the MountainsThis Zelengora hiking adventure leads you through one of the most pristine areas of Sutjeska National Park. The journey offers dramatic scenery and unforgettable panoramic views. Experienced mountaineers consider Zelengora the most beautiful mountain in the Balkans, consequently often calling it the Queen of the Mountains. True to its name (zelen = green, gora = mountain), Zelengora Mountain stretches across 160 km² of lush forests, endless meadows, and high-alpine landscapes. Furthermore, this area is located within Sutjeska National Park, which is the oldest and largest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Glacial Treasures and WildernessOne of Zelengora’s greatest treasures are its eight famous glacial lakes, also known as the “mountain eyes” of Zelengora. Scattered across the mountain, these emerald lakes are a paradise for nature lovers. In fact, each lake is enclosed by dramatic ridgelines and steep rock faces dropping toward crystal-clear water, thereby creating scenery that leaves every visitor speechless. Dense forests, untouched pastures, and pristine wilderness further ensure Zelengora is one of the most unspoiled mountain regions in the Balkans. Zelengora is remarkably peaceful and remote, offering a true escape from noise and modern life. The mountain is home to rare plant species, chamois, eagles, and other alpine wildlife that enhance its authentic wilderness.
The Hike to BregocZelengora is breathtaking from every angle. Each viewpoint reveals sweeping panoramas of towering peaks, deep canyons, wild rivers, ancient forests, and flower-covered meadows. Ultimately, this creates an untouched world that feels far removed from modern life.
During this adventure, after approximately two hours of hiking, we ascend Bregoc, the highest green peak of Zelengora Mountain. The views from the summit are spectacular, offering a complete panorama over Sutjeska National Park. Subsequently, after reaching the peak, we continue toward one of the mountain’s most beautiful lakes, Orlovačko Lake. Here, visitors often say they feel as if they’ve stepped into a fairy tale.
