Discover the untouched beauty of Perucica Rainforest and the majestic Skakavac Waterfall on an unforgettable hiking adventure.
The Perucica rainforest is approximately 20,000 years old, which makes it the oldest rainforest in Europe.
What Makes the Perucica Rainforest Unique?Rainforest Perucica is one of the rare forests in Europe that has developed entirely on its own, without human interference. Everything here follows nature’s original rhythm – growth, life, and decay. Here, everything follows nature’s own rhythm, without any human interference.
With its 1,400 hectares, Perucica is the biggest rainforest in Europe. Furthermore, it contains various types of plant vegetation that have not yet been fully explored. For example, there are many trees around 300 years old. Trees over 50 meters high can be found in the Perucica rainforest, and currently, the highest measured is 57.4 meters. It is covered with various trees such as beech and spruce, some of which are 50 meters tall. Moreover, hidden in the heart of Perućica, the Skakavac Waterfall drops over 80 meters, creating a breathtaking natural wonder.
Scientific Importance and Protection of Perucica RainforestBecause of its untouched structure, Perucica is often studied as a natural example of how primeval forests function without human influence.
Due to its beauty and richness, the rainforest was declared a strictly protected part of nature in 1952, used exclusively for scientific and educational purposes. Subsequently, in 1954, it was placed under state protection as a nature reserve.
Where is Perucica Rainforest Located? The Perucica Rainforest is located within Sutjeska National Park, near the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. This truly oasis of nature in Europe is surrounded by imposing mountain peaks in BiH: Maglic, Volujak, Snijeznica, and Zelengora.

Departure time flexible
The vegetation of the Perucica rainforest is very dense—in fact, it’s almost twice as dense as the famous Amazon.
Your Unforgettable Journey to Skakavac WaterfallExpect an unforgettable hike through the heart of the Perucica Rainforest, surrounded by towering trees and untouched wilderness. Your primary goal on this journey is the magnificent Skakavac Waterfall, where crystal-clear water plunges dramatically into the deep valley below.
As you approach Skakavac Waterfall, the forest becomes quieter, and the air feels cooler and heavier with moisture.
Standing below the waterfall, most people stop talking for a moment, simply listening to the sound of water and taking in the power of the place.
Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking viewpoints, diverse flora and fauna, and the pure serenity of Sutjeska National Park. Ultimately, this tour offers a perfect blend of wild nature, scenic landscapes, and authentic adventure.
Guided Hike with Safety and Expert GuidesTo elaborate, you will embark on a guided hike through the untouched Perucica Rainforest, one of the last rainforests in Europe. With our expert guides, you will feel safe and get to know the rainforest in the best possible way.
Due to dense vegetation and unmarked trails, entering the rainforest without licensed guides is strictly forbidden. We are among the few organizations authorized to lead guests directly to Skakavac Waterfall, ensuring both safety and access to the heart of Perucica.
A Rare Wilderness Experience in EuropeWalking through Perucica feels different from any other forest in Europe.
Dense vegetation, fallen trees, and complete silence create an atmosphere more often associated with remote wilderness than a national park.
This is one of the few places on the continent where nature still follows its own rhythm, untouched and unchanged.
Perucica Rainforest Hiking Tour start with a scheduled departure from either Tjentiste or Foca (we can arrange the time according to your wish).
Scenic Drive and ViewpointsFrom the place of departure to the starting point for walking, we will drive through the beautiful landscapes of Sutjeska National Park. The driving time, for example, is about 1 hour from Foca, while it takes only about 25 minutes from Tjentiste.
Before the hike begins, we will first visit the Beskita viewpoint. This spot offers an excellent view of the Perucica rainforest, Maglic Mountain (the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina), as well as other surrounding mountains such as Volujak and Zelengora.
Waterfall Hike and RefreshmentDuring this adventure, we will visit the magnificent Skakavac Waterfall, which is 80 meters high and is located in the heart of the Perucica rainforest. After approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes of walking through the dense forest, we will reach the waterfall. Consequently, the bravest among you can take a swim right under the waterfall!
Return and Historical StopAfter resting under the waterfall, we then continue our adventure by returning back to the car (a walk of about 1 hour and 40 minutes). On the way back, we will return by our off-road vehicle to the Valley of Heroes, where we will visit the famous monument to fallen soldiers from the Second World War, in addition to the museum.
Finally, we return to the meeting point. This marks the end of your Perucica rainforest hiking adventure.
I did the hike in Perucica forest with Adventure BiH and I had a great experience.
The admin team is always replying to questions super fast and are giving a lot of helpful info not only about the tour but also about moving around this area. They assisted me a lot even with last minute requests.
Our guide was also amazing and super knowledgeable about the area. He made sure we all stayed safe and enjoyed our hike, showing some insanely beautiful landscape.
Highly recommend them for excursions in Sutjeska and Tara.
Wir hatten einen tollen Tag mit einem super netten Guide. Die Wanderung ist wunderschön, aber für gelegenheits Wanderer aus dem Flachland auch wirklich anstrengend. Der Wasserfall ist magisch und jede Mühe wert.
We had a great experience going into the Perućica rainforest! The guide took us all the way to the waterfall which was a though hike, but worth the sweat 🙂 He was very capable of guiding us the easiest and safest way down and up the mountain again. He was very patient and knows when to take breaks naturally. It was an amazing walk with amazing views. We (young couple from the Netherlands) especially liked his stories and knowledge about the rainforest and it’s history.
Great tour in an astonishing forest with wonderful views to the waterfall. The contact to arrange the tour was very helpful and quick via chat and we had a nice and good guide! Very much recommended!
