Perucica rainforest is old about 20,000 years, what making it the oldest rainforest in Europe.

Rainforest Perucica, or literally old forest, is called forests that have not been influenced by man, forests that have evolved completely naturally since their inception.
The human hand has never had an impact on the birth-life-dying cycle of plants and animals in this rainforest. With its 1400 ha is the bigest rainforest in Europe. In the Perucica are various types of plant vegetation which still not yet been explore. There are a large number of trees around 300 years old. Trees over 50 meters high can be found in the Perucica rainforest, and currently the highest measured is 57.4 meters high. It is covered with various trees such as beech and spruce, some of which are 50 meters long. In the heart of the Perucica is a waterfall Skakavac high 80 meters.
According to scientists at Yale University, Perucica offers a unique study on the role of rainforest in the global carbon cycle, since it is one of the last rainforest in urban Europe, making it the perfect natural laboratory.
Due to its beauty and richness, in 1952 the rainforest was declared a strictly protected part of nature which is used exclusively for scientific and educational purposes, while in 1954 it was placed under state protection as a nature reserve.
One of the last oasis of untouched nature in Europe, is surrounded by imposing mountain peaks in BiH, Maglic, Volujak, Snijeznica, and Zelengora.

What to Expect

The vegetation of Perucica rainforest is very dense, even twice as dense as the famous Amazon.

With our expert guides you will feel safe and get to know the rainforest in the best way. We are one of the few organizations that guide our clients to the heart of the Perucica, to the Skakavac waterfall. Due to the densely intertwined forest and unmarked trails in the rainforest it is strictly forbidden to enter without professional guides. As part of this activity for your confidence, we will take you to the place Prijevor (below the highest mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina), which offers the most beautiful views of the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina. These are some of the details that make us different from other organizations.
Next time you want to explore a jungle, you don’t need to go to South America, Africa or Asia, because you have got a perfect destination in Europe as well.

Itinerary

Day 1Perucica rainforest hiking

Departure from Tjentiste or Foca (we can arrange the time according to your wish).
From the place of departure to the starting point for walking we will drive through the landscapes of Sutjeska National Park. The driving time from Foca is about 1 hour, while from Tjentiste about 25 minutes. Before the hike, we will visit the Beskita viewpoint, which offers an excellent view of the Perucica rainforest, the Maglic mountain (the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina) and other mountains such as Volujak and Zelengora.
During this adventure, we will visit the Skakavac waterfall, which is 75 meters high and is located in the heart of the rainforest Perucica. After about 1 hour and 20 minutes of walking through the dense forest of Perucica, we will reach the Skakavac waterfall. Under the waterfall, we will enjoy a lunch package that includes a sandwich, fruit, a chocolate bar and water. Also, the bravest can swim under the waterfall.
After resting under the waterfall, we continue our adventure by returning back to the car (about 1h 40 min walk). Return by our off-road vehicle to the Valley of Heroes, where we will visit the monument to fallen soldiers from the Second World War as well as the museum.

Wir sind mit unserem Guide im Rainforest gewesen, dieser kann nur mit einem Guide besucht werden. Wir wurden mit dem Jeep zum Ausgangspunkt der Wanderung gebracht. Von dort aus ging es recht steil hinab zum Wasserfall. Dieser ist wirklich beeindruckend und den Abstieg definitiv wert. Leider hat uns auf dem Rückweg ein Gewitter erwischt, so dass wir die Schönheiten des Regenwaldes nicht richtig genießen konnten. Vielleicht beim nächsten Mal.

I did the hike in Perucica forest with Adventure BiH and I had a great experience.

The admin team is always replying to questions super fast and are giving a lot of helpful info not only about the tour but also about moving around this area. They assisted me a lot even with last minute requests.

Our guide was also amazing and super knowledgeable about the area. He made sure we all stayed safe and enjoyed our hike, showing some insanely beautiful landscape.

Highly recommend them for excursions in Sutjeska and Tara.

Wir hatten einen tollen Tag mit einem super netten Guide. Die Wanderung ist wunderschön, aber für gelegenheits Wanderer aus dem Flachland auch wirklich anstrengend. Der Wasserfall ist magisch und jede Mühe wert.

We had a great experience going into the Perućica rainforest! The guide took us all the way to the waterfall which was a though hike, but worth the sweat 🙂 He was very capable of guiding us the easiest and safest way down and up the mountain again. He was very patient and knows when to take breaks naturally. It was an amazing walk with amazing views. We (young couple from the Netherlands) especially liked his stories and knowledge about the rainforest and it’s history.
