What Makes the Perucica Rainforest Unique?

Rainforest Perucica is one of the rare forests in Europe that has developed entirely on its own, without human interference. Everything here follows nature’s original rhythm – growth, life, and decay. Here, everything follows nature’s own rhythm, without any human interference.

With its 1,400 hectares, Perucica is the biggest rainforest in Europe. Furthermore, it contains various types of plant vegetation that have not yet been fully explored. For example, there are many trees around 300 years old. Trees over 50 meters high can be found in the Perucica rainforest, and currently, the highest measured is 57.4 meters. It is covered with various trees such as beech and spruce, some of which are 50 meters tall. Moreover, hidden in the heart of Perućica, the Skakavac Waterfall drops over 80 meters, creating a breathtaking natural wonder.

Scientific Importance and Protection of Perucica Rainforest

Because of its untouched structure, Perucica is often studied as a natural example of how primeval forests function without human influence.

Due to its beauty and richness, the rainforest was declared a strictly protected part of nature in 1952, used exclusively for scientific and educational purposes. Subsequently, in 1954, it was placed under state protection as a nature reserve.

Where is Perucica Rainforest Located?

The Perucica Rainforest is located within Sutjeska National Park, near the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. This truly oasis of  nature in Europe is surrounded by imposing mountain peaks in BiH: Maglic, Volujak, Snijeznica, and Zelengora.
